The job of the school counselor is dynamic involving various responsibilities from career planning to preventing violence. The basic requirement is to help students who require guidance in the various aspects of their life. School counselors help students make decisions regarding their personal and academic development. They provide drug, alcohol rehabilitation to the students. School counselors also conduct conflict resolution sessions. School counselors are part or both public and private schools. They meet the students individually or take sessions in groups. They also help the students in choosing various career options. The applicants must have a strong desire to help others. They must be able to inspire, respect, trust, and confidence. They must be comfortable in working in a team when required. The applicants must possess physical and emotional energy to handle the problems that they address. The applicants must be filled with positive attitude and energy towards life.

School Counselor Duties and Responsibilities

  • Listen to individual problem and work on it by finding a solution
  • Provide advice to the students in various fields
  • Provide drug, abuse, alcohol rehabilitation to the students
  • Provide sessions to resolve conflicts
  • Provide anger management and other difficult mood sessions

School Counselor Education, Training and Qualifications

The aspirants must hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, or liberal art. A background in psychology or child psychology is required as the job involves behavior, emotions and mind therapies. Several universities and colleges offer degree in school counseling. All aspiring school counselors should be certified. Other states require renewing certifications every 5 years with continuing education and professional development. A lot of patience is required to listen to various confessions.

School Counselor Degrees, Courses and Certifications

Initial certification and non-degree program is offered by the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services. Students applying must hold a graduate degree in counseling before applying. Students willing to apply for the initial certification/non-degree program in school counseling are required to hold the master’s degree in counseling from the program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
